Pressure in work environments is unfortunately not uncommon. At some point in everyone’s career — we face pressure. Along with pressure comes stress, burnout, and setbacks.
Handling this pressure is no rocket science, but handling this well, takes experience and confidence in self. Through these burnouts and setbacks that I have faced in the past, I’ve learned a few tips and tricks that help me successfully navigate through them.
- Identifying pressure! Sometimes, you do not even know when you are under pressure. The amount of pressure you face is so vast, that you get lost in it. It's important to “STOP” and take a breather. One way is to listen to your body. If you don’t give your mind and body a break — it will make you take a break! So before it comes to that, put some thought into recognizing the signs you show when you are being pressured. Train yourself to put up a mental red flag when this happens.
- Trying to avoid being pressurized. Now, stress and pressure are inevitable, but you need to find ways to reduce them rather than cope up with them. Prevention is better than cure.
- “Working under pressure” is a little overrated. Productivity clearly decreases. Focus also follows! Pressure does no good. Ask for help when you need help. Talk to your seniors, be vocal. You have a voice. Use it wisely. Allocate time for yourself. Set your timetable in a way that works for you and your colleagues. Do not have counterproductive meetings. Do not reinvent the wheels. Use the latest tools and technology out there to help you with things. Use them to leverage the work you do!
- Avoid saying yes to EVERYTHING. Now, dedication is important. Hard work, is also important! However, it's important that you have passion for what you do. Too much for anything is good for nothing. I would not ask anyone to shut a coworker down and slap them with a hard “NO”. Provide a reasonable explanation why. Or, tell them when you can accommodate the task.
- Expose yourself to society and nature! Humans are social creatures. Have your own community. Get some sunlight. Get that coffee! You work to live! You don't live to work. 😃
