6 Ways to Ensure You've Landed a Great BA Role

There are plenty of things to consider when finding yourself a job. You will most likely be spending around 8-9 hours a day minimum working. So, it is important to know that you have chosen the best possible job that allows you to have the desired work-life balance and that it is a job that will add massive value to your career.

Especially with the present remote working situation, there are many individuals now on the hunt for a remote job. This in turn might make you think that it is much harder to know if an organization is the right fit. You might get hired online and then you get to work online, at the comfort of your own home.

This article explores some ways that you can verify you've landed a great BA role for yourself. Some of the pointers that I'll be discussing below will be applicable across almost all industries. So, let's dive right in.

1. Professionalism in the job advert

Pay special attention to the professionalism with which the job advert is presented. Make sure the advert looks legit and has no major errors in it.

2. Your job description involves stakeholder engagement

As a business analyst, it is vital to have a client-facing role to add real value to your career. Ideally, this job advert should emphasize the role you play as the bridge between clients and the team. If they got this, it's a good sign. They care about their customers and want someone to be on their best game to create higher levels of client satisfaction.

3. They are serious about the company culture

If the company puts in a line or two about their culture, they are serious about hiring just the right fits. You will then know what to expect from the rest of your team before you delve into the company as an employee.

4. Your job description involves a clear direction of your roles, responsibilities, and accountabilities

It should be clear how you fit in with the other roles in the company. This could be your involvement with project managers, the development team, and upper management.

As a business analyst, you will be responsible for performing certain vital tasks ranging from requirement gathering, requirement maintaining to sometimes being a proxy product owner. In these cases, you hold accountability for project success, the team's goal achievements, and strategies.

5. There are no completely unrelated, random duties in your job description

There are some misconceptions about being a Business Analyst. If the company wants you to write down the minutes of a meeting and pass it on, provide system support, etc., this is not business analysis. You are a more involved role in an organization. After all, you are an 'analyst'. The analyst's job is to break down a complex topic, process, or whatever into digestible parts to gain a better understanding. An analysis is done to further better a process in terms of efficiency, profitability, or any other positive aspect.

6. Do your background research on the organization

This organization should have a strong presence or it should show clear signs of progression. Ensure that this organization seeks to improve its BA practices. In order to do that, I suggest you check their Glassdoor reviews, LinkedIn, and do a simple Google Search. This will after all take only 10-15 good minutes out of your time but would save you from a lifetime of trouble! 😉

Apart from all that mentioned above, make sure you can learn from your team and make sure you can really add value to the organization. Ensure this is a place that values your opinion and is ready to grow with you. This way, you are serving justice to both parties.
